Pre-Conference Workshops

    • The dictionary defines “disaster” as a …”calamitous event”.  Most registrars call that “Monday”! Regardless of the size of the institution, registrars are often in the middle of supporting the institution as it navigates “calamitous events”, both large and small. The workshop will address different types of events that might occur, covering a wide array of events such as weather,  chemical spills, fires, or health-related (Yes, COVID is still a thing).  Using these examples from real life, we will talk through issues around deadlines, course schedule changes, teaching modalities, financial aid, veteran’s benefits and the multitude of policies or procedures that might need to be modified in the face of these events.  Attendees are encouraged to bring examples of their own calamitous events for group discussion.
    • Do you have questions about student privacy? Need help understanding what your responsibilities are? Think you know everything there is to know about the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)?  Well, we’re here to help! Join the U.S. Department of Education’s Privacy Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) for an workshop on the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the principal federal law protecting students’ privacy. This workshop will introduce you to the fundamentals of FERPA, and provide depth and clarity on its application to the 21st century school and classroom! This workshop is not only an introduction to the law, but will also challenge you seek balance by providing the legal background of the statute with real-world scenarios to which this law applies. The U.S. Department of Education’s Privacy Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) is issuing a challenge to all attendees to come put their knowledge to the test!  Do you think you have what it takes? To that we say, “It depends!”
    • Imagine an Excel worksheet of student enrollment figures with hundreds or thousands of rows of data. The worksheet lays out all the data about your students' academic history, bio/demo, courses, and grades. It is a lot of data to deal with. How can you get information out of the worksheet? How can you make sense out of all this data? You can get all the information you need by using Excel PivotTables. A PivotTable quickly and easily turns all that data into small, concise reports that tell you exactly what you need to know. This workshop will focus on beginner through advanced skills.

As a part of your conference registration, you can also register to take a $25 pre-conference trip to Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site and experience a guided, walking interpretive tour that shares the story of the Little Rock Nine, desegregation, education and civil rights.  Convenient pick-up and drop-off will be offered from the Little Rock Marriott on Sunday, February 6, 2022, with the guided tour beginning at 9:00 am or 11:00 am and lasting approximately one to two hours.  While at the national historic site, you can also explore the park’s visitor center. NoteArkACRAO members participating in the pre-conference trip are encouraged to register for the 9:00 am tour so that it does not conflict with the ArkACRAO meeting.

Attending this pre-conference trip will enhance your conference experience and provide context for our closing conference speaker, Dr. Sybil Jordan Hampton.  In 1959, Dr. Hampton was a member of the second group of pioneering black students to integrate to Central High School.  She has served as a higher education administrator, leader in philanthropy, and was inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame in 2005.
